Sainsbury’s shopper shares ‘brilliant’ £1 coin hack to reduce price of your weekly shop

To try the hack, customers need a Nectar Card and £1 to spend. The nifty trick involves scanning your Nectar card and paying for just one item at the till – instead of your whole shop – and seeing if you are given a coupon.

In her example, the shopper says she purchased something that cost £1 and was given a £4.50 voucher in return.

This means she can then use this money-off coupon against the rest of her shop, or a larger spend next time she is in store.

Writing on the Money saving hints, tips and ideas Facebook group, she said: “I don’t shop at Sainsbury’s often, but when I do, I pay for one item first, which is just over a £1.

“I usually then get a money off voucher for my next shop, today it was £4.50. Hope this is helpful.”

If you are thinking of trying this hack out, keep in mind there is no guarantee you will get a voucher each time you make a purchase.

The amount of money you can get in the form of a voucher is also random, reports MEN.

To see if you are in luck, scan your Nectar card before paying for your item and keep an eye out for any coupons.

Other shoppers have been left impressed by the supermarket trick. One person said: “I’ve never thought to do this! Will definitely keep in mind now, thank you.”

The Nectar loyalty scheme is free to sign up to online and allows you to collect points that can be exchanged for money off your shop – this is on top of any coupons that are randomly printed after you have paid for something.

One Nectar point is worth 0.5p, which means 100 points would convert into 50p to spend.

There are around 18 million customers signed up to Nectar, and the points you collect can be used in multiple stores and online retailers, such as Argos and eBay.
